The mask and the face

The ascendant

Your Sun sign says who you are deep down. Your ascendant says how you make your entrance: the first impression, the style, the way you approach the unknown.

The sign that was rising

In twenty-four hours, the Earth turns once on itself and all twelve signs of the zodiac pass over the eastern horizon, like the Sun in the morning. The ascendant is the sign, and the precise degree, that was rising on that horizon at the moment and place of your birth.

Turn the sky below: at every moment, the sign pointed at on the left is the ascendant. Notice that at sunrise, the ascendant is the day's Sun sign.

Why time and place matter

A sign stays on the ascendant for two hours on average, about one degree every four minutes. But that average hides big differences: the Earth's axis is tilted (the obliquity), so that in Paris Aries and Pisces rise in about an hour, while Virgo or Libra take nearly three. The further you get from the equator, the wider the gap: compare with Reykjavik.

The calculation therefore starts from three pieces of data: the date, the exact time converted to universal time using the place's time zone, and the city's latitude and longitude, which give the local sidereal time. The formulas are detailed on the Method page.

Sun or ascendant?

☉ Sun sign
Your core identity, what drives you and makes you feel alive.
The same for everyone born in the same period of the year.
Known from the date of birth alone.
↑ Ascendant
Your way of relating to others, the image people perceive first.
Changes roughly every two hours, and from one city to another.
Requires the exact time and place.

The two complement each other: we often discover a person's ascendant first, then their Sun as we get to know them. When they fall in the same sign, what you show and who you are look very much alike. Opposite the ascendant lies the descendant, associated with what we look for in others.

What if I don't know my time?

Depending on the country, the time of birth appears on the full (long-form) birth certificate or in the maternity records. A baby book, a birth announcement or a parent's memory can also help.

Without a time, AstroGramme doesn't guess your ascendant: an error of one hour is enough to change sign. Your Sun sign, the Moon, Venus and Mars are still calculated, with a note when the body changed sign that very day.
